THE STORY ABOUT THE HORSE CARRIAGE RIDER OF A GENERAL (Câu chuyện về tên xà ích của một vị tướng quốc)

A story goes that a talented and mighty general had a horse carriage rider who married to a young, virtuous wife. One day, as the rider finished his job and came back home, he found his wife arranging her stuff as if she was about to leave. Seeing a touch of sadness on her face, he asked what she’s doing. She said she would return to her parent’s house. As the rider surprisingly asked for the reason, she replied:

– I felt shame on you!

The rider got bewildered, insisting her on giving him a reason, she said:

– I went to the market this morning and saw you swaggeringly riding for the general, with the way you brandished a whip as if you were the number one.

The rider said:

-You think I have no position, don’t you? I do. I am the rider of a distinguished general. What’s wrong if I feel proud and swagger?

The wife replied:

– Yes, I know you are the general’s rider. But look at the general, he sat in the carriage in a simple, humble manner while you, merely a rider, act so high and mighty. Shame on you! I want to leave for my parent’s house.

The rider felt ashamed of himself and promised to change his attitude.

The story of the carriage rider makes me think about myself, about my behavior that is very much in style of personality cult with the over-usage of honorifics. Guru has warned, or even reproached me many times for this fault but this “disease” seems not to be totally rooted out.

Looking from outside, the rider’s complacence and overweening on his position seems have no relation with the way I over-use honorifics when writing about Guru but in fact, they are the same in nature. When writing words which should be used for holy saints, I myself fall into the pitfall of personality cult partly because of selfishness, simply thinking I was so proud to be Guru’s disciple; Guru is the one who found out six wonderful mind dharmas, has unique ashram and a lot of followers from all over the world; and he’s the one who publicly pointed out the wrongdoings of fake monks and evil forces to promote right view (sammaditthi) for the benefit of the sentient beings.

A righteous Guru devotion is when we write and talk about Guru in a respectful manner and sincere faith that accords with the Middle Path. The practitioner establishes a firm foundation of enlightenment on the basis of Guru devotion because “devotion is the core of the practice; it really is a kind of practice. The qualities of devotion are respect, aspiration and genuine faith. Without devotion, the seed of liberation will dry up and die while, with devotion, all noble qualities of the enlightenment path will increasingly grow

Like Guru Rinpoche once taught:

Complete devotion brings complete blessing

Absence of doubts brings complete success.” (Guru Yoga by Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche)

Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche

However, if the practitioner falls into the trap of personality cult, he is bounded by the detrimental circle of ignorance “me, I, myself”, “gain-loss, praise-blame” as well as subtle arrogance “my Guru is the number one”. It is this subtle arrogance that kills all good deeds of the practitioner. In the Dakini Teachings, Guru Rinpoche warned: “

“Do not be conceited about anything. If you retain the pride of thinking that you are learned, great, or noble, you will not acquire any good qualities. So cast away conceit and train yourself in Dharma practice without wavering for even a single moment.

First, train gradually in this with the smallest deeds. From time to time, check to see whether or not you are tainted by the defilement of self-interest. You will not be successful if you retain even the tiniest taint of selfishness. Make sure not to be tainted by the defilement of self-interest.”

Dakini Teachings

It is my selfishness, subtle conceit and loss of self-respect that have defiled the virtue and merit of Guru, sown disrespect to Guru, and paved the way for evil monks and forces, who have already been jealous with Guru, to blacken his reputation and make others misunderstood him. A typical example is the story of Nick Denittis who was interested in learning Dharma in Song Nguyen Tantra House, but in the last minute, he got swayed by false rumor of Guru. Therefore, not only the breaking of Tantric vow I’ve made (showing disrespect to Guru) but also indirectly hindered those who are seeking for liberation. In the Dakini Teachings, Padmashambhava taught: “There are violators who proclaim their master’s virtues to others but in the end bring more opponents to him.”

Repentant letter of Nick Denittis

Guru’s reply to Nick Denittis

My selfishness has caused defilement that affects Guru. I’ve failed to follow his example and at the same time, defied his teachings on humility, self-respect and respect for others. A true Guru overcomes all fame, praise and blame. All his bodhi activities aims to guide the sentient beings like Patrul Rinpoche wrote in The Words of My Perfect Teacher: “For the sake of promoting his followers through skillful means, such a Guru may, at present, be behaving like a common man. But in the real sense, his mind equals that of a Buddha, and therefore he is altogether different from an ordinary person. All of his actions are done solely in order to adjust to the nature of his followers, and you should definitely regard them as thoughtful conduct which is superior to that of others.”

The Words of My Perfect Teacher

When coming to Guru’s place, Tantra Sutradaka (Prof.  Dr. Avinash Kumar Srivastava) was going to bow down before Guru but Guru pulled him up and quickly hugged him before he could touch Guru’s feet. Two monks from Srilanka joined palms to their chest before Guru petitioning for Dharma learning; Guru has delicately put a status of Avalokiteshvara in front of him. Prof. Dr. Dhan Singh Ravi (India) after getting the light of right view (sammaditthi) in the Vimalakirti’s room touchingly wrote comments in honorifics like “Most Venerable Guruji”, Guru gently taught: “Please call me “Dear Guru”.” An Egyptian reader named Moment Mohamed who has suffered afflictions and hardships for quite a long time feels like a thirsty man who luckily meets the lake of pure water after reading Guru’s articles. He gave comments to many articles per day, even spending a day off of work commenting nine articles. In first comments, he used honorific title: “Dear holy and saint Guru”. Guru then replied: “No, I am not saint Guru, only normal Guru.”

When coming to Guru’s place, Tantra Sutradaka (Prof. Dr. Avinash Kumar Srivastava) was going to bow down before Guru but Guru pulled him up and quickly hugged him before he could touch Guru’s feet

Only at international conference 2018, did Guru accept Tantra Sutradaka to bow before him

And I myself got the teaching from Guru in the latest comment: “You wrote well but deferential style and honorifics are just used for Buddhist saints while I am not! Such an irreverence, irreverence! Your comment makes me look at my treasures of self-respect and respect for others. You’ve lost these treasures but instead merely used worldly treasure of Praise-Blame which pushes you in personality cult!” I feel lucky to have Guru straightening out my view so as to avoid heavy consequences, giving me a chance to have a self-reflection and “save” my treasures of self-respect, respect for others and humility.

Tantra Upatissa bow before Guru

Dear Guru!

Disciple Mat Dieu Hang sincerely repent to you, for the loss of treasures of self-respect and respect for others that you’ve wholeheartedly taught us, because of a lack of mindfulness. Thank you for straightly pointing out my fault so that I can timely stop at the edge of samsara. Please let me purify my fault.

Let me state three spiritual keys:

O’ Guru Rinpoche, please turn my mind towards the Dharma

O’ Perfect Enlightened Ones, don’t let me stray onto wrong or inferior path

O’ Compassionate Guru, who is one of these masters, please take care of me”

May Guru and your consort have health and live long for the cause of Dharma dissemination

May all sentient beings have the sense of modesty and self-respect

May Covid-19 pandemic soon be swept away.

Om Mani Padme Hum.

Disciple – Mat Dieu Hang

    Nguyên Thành says:

    Dear disciples!

I know that you all write with sincerity but it doesn’t fit my status and position. Even if that is true, you shouldn’t over use deferential style and honorifics or you will fall into self-attachment (me, I, myself). There is an old saying: “A chained buffalo hates the one grazing in the field”, this is even right with the case of those who live a monastic life, who have no shame on their wrongdoings. In the meantime, some people saw and knew their immoral behaviors which were criticized by the media quite a lot of times, but they chose to keep silence, just like “live for yourself, there’s no one else” or “I am not in a position to criticize a bhikkhu”.. . This is the attitude of spiritual slavery that is already warned by the Buddha in the Mahaparinirvana Sutra. On the contrary, there’s someone who is not monk, have equal knowledge of right reason, right dharma, right view and right thought like us, has raised their voice criticizing and threatening us like mafia when we expose the inauthencity of Ullambana Sutra in a Youtube channel. I have stored the evidence which we saw and read. As you can see, though Song Nguyen Tantra House gives “counter-argument” in the sense of academics and Bodhicitta according to the right orbit of Dharma, still they let anger and hatred occupy them and silently “disseminate false information” in an attempt to equivocate with the public.

Specifically, we’d sent 37 counter-argumentative articles to phatgiao.org.vn or 36 articles to Thu Vien Hoa Sen (Lotus Library) run by Hoang Lien Tam. We showed them “the treasure filled with gold” (striking their wrong view as the way of “detoxification”), by which we should be called their “teacher” as Xunzi (荀子) once said: “He who correctly criticizes me is my teacher”. However, they and their followers had denied our kindness by slandering, harassing and threatening us. Even they were willing to join with opposite overseas Buddhist websites to defame us (I’m keeping the whole evidence). Their activities run against Article 5, Law on Belief and Religion; Article 122, Criminal Law 2013; the Buddha’s teaching on six harmonies: “Harmony in view through sharing the same understanding”; and precepts of bhikkhu and layman. This explains why Nick Denittis, though having diligently read articles in our website for two years, retrogressed rapidly after hearing false words from his wife who is the follower of monks who got counter-arguments from Song Nguyen Tantra House. Later, he felt regret and wrote a repentant letter (I ask Mat Dieu Hang post this letter publicly). The case of Nick Denittis indicates that these monks have indirectly impeded those who wish to learn dharma and seek for liberation. The more they throw slander on us, the more they incur heavy consequences, given five persons (both bhikkhu and layman) are said to suffer from their bad actions. For these reasons, since March 2018, after the establishment of the ITA which has no relation with belief and religion and not under the management of the Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam and the Ministry of Home Affairs, we’ve stopped all counter-argumentative activities and focused on the propagation of Thanh Tri Yoga. This Yoga has been submitted and successfully defensed before the Science Board of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA).

Hence, I insist on you stopping over-praising me which will evoke jealousy from evil monks that can push them into dangerous situation (at least 50 persons have reportedly experienced unexpected consequences so far). I know who I am! I cannot “sit in the same table with holy saints” if I get praise; and I shall never “enter the hell door with extremely evil people” if I get blame or vilification! I have done all I need; no more clinging and attachment like the transient, drifting cloud on the mountain peak. Therefore, the over-use of honorifics on me will become wrong no matter how genuine you are. These are few of my words that you should bear in mind! May all sentient beings always be aware of the treasures of self-respect and respect for others in their spiritual cultivation!

    Om Ah Hum!

    Thinley- Nguyen Thanh

  3. Tantra Ashihata (Simon Michael) says:
    Dear holy Guru,

    My name is Tantra Ashihata.

I thank you for this article you have given to us, you made me to understand that pride lead to to arrogance and which can make one to lost he or her good treasure.

May you at all the time be on our guide so as to practice right to avoid the wrong view.

May Guru live long for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May the soul of my mother and all other sentient beings who have died rest in peace.

May the end of corona virus come to an end soon, may all sentient beings be free from suffering,

    Om mani padme hum

  4. Dr C H Lakshminarayan says:
I pay my homage to Gurunji.

What we understand in this most significant article, is that when an elephant goes on the road, the street dogs bark !.  That is their nature ! No body can help . The Royal Elephant ignores and do not take it into cognisence and marches on and on. Guru has rightly said not to use extra honorific words and flatter him to attract his attention so that the jealousy people would not tolerate and try to do some harmful and adverse things which affect Guruji. One noteworthy quality of Guruji  which is glaringly seen by all is” forget and forgive” as in this case who realizes his mistake and repents and writes an apology begging pardon. Incidentally I recapture Jesus’s words on the Cross,” Forgive them My Lord, they know not what they do “!

    Sarve Janaha Sukhino bhavanthu.

    Om Mani padme Hum.

    Tantra Nirvadeva.

    Dear Guru,
I have read this article and your comment. After read the story of a general’s rider and Guru’s comment, I feel ashamed about my behavior of over-using honorific when talking and writing about Guru while Guru is simple, humble and overcome all fame, praise and blame. I understand that Guru devotion is the core of practice but the righteous devotion is when we write and talk about Guru in a respectful manner and sincere faith that accord with the Middle Path. If we over-use deferential style and honorific, we will fall into personality cult, we also cause defilement that affects Guru, evoke jealousy from bhikkhu and also interfere beings who wish to learn Dharma and seek for liberation. May Guru and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Covid-19 pandemic will end soon.

May all sentient beings attain the Buddha’s nature happiness.

  6. Tantra Mashita says:
Dear holy, respected and honorable guru,

I bow my head down for you !

Thank you so much for sharing this article with us in fact it’s an extraordinary article ! the thoughts of the young wife impressed me and made me speechless ! She was really a virtuous wife as you described it while I was reading this article I suddenly remembered two verses from the dhammapada and I also realized why did Buddha said these two verses the first verse says “why is there laughter ! why is there joy ! while this world is always burning ? Why do you not seek a light ! you who are shrouded in darkness?” and the second verse says “in retirement looking for enjoyment where enjoyment seemed difficult, letting go of all pleasures, calling nothing one’s own, let the wise cleanse oneself from all the troubles of the mind ! ” thank you so much again !

May you have good health and live long for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

May the pandemic caused by corona virus soon end

    Om Mani Padme Hum

Dear Holy Guru, thank you for another good article. I give respect to my teacher especially if I am in error and get corrected before I fall too far away.if I have a question or doubt I will ask my teacher for guidance to right thought or action. As I have stated before I am learning much but need to learn more. May Holy Guru and consort live a long and Happy Life. OM MANI PADME HUNG.               TANTRA HIMATARU.
  9. Mật Chánh Tấn says:
    Dear Guru!

I would like to express my gratitude to your teaching and say thanks to Dharma brother Mat Dieu Hang for letting me know about such an important lesson. From that, I need to look back, reflect and correct my own body, speech and mind activities to right orbit round the correct doctrine of the Buddha.

From the story of the horse carriage rider and the Guru’s teaching in comment , I understand that I need to be more careful when writing or talking about Guru, avoiding over-use honorifics. Because that would pave the way for evil months and forces, who already were jealous with Guru, to blacken his reputation and make others misunderstood him, and indirectly prevent other people who are seeking liberation like the real situation of Nick Denittis. I understand the cause for all of that just because I let myself fall into the trap of personality cult or being surrounded by the ignorance “me, I, myself”. If I let this fault continue without correcting it, it would also mean I was showing disrespect to the Guru. And that deadly violation would burn all of the merrit I could have accumulated so far, preventing me from taking more steps in the path of liberation because “without devotion, the seed of liberation will dry up and die” (Guru Yoga by Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche). Thank you Guru and Dharma brother Mat Dieu Hang for letting me learn such a valuable lesson about humility, which I need to remember and apply carefully.

May Guru and his consort live long for the sake of other sentient beings.

May Dharma brother Mat Dieu Hang have good health and get more happiness in Dharma life.

May the epidemic of Covid-19 come to end soon.

May all sentient beings be free from suffering and get enlightened.

  12. Tantra Lanidha (Ralph Keating) says:
    Dear Guru,

Thank you for allowing me to read this article from Mật Diệu Hằng teaching caution regarding selfishness and pride that can be fostered by overuse of honorifics.  While my Guru devotion is still immature, it’s is my understanding that reading and commenting, study and practice Dharma, is the best way to express this devotion.

I will cast aside false pride and practice diligently as in the Dakini Teachings, of Guru Rinpoche:  “Do not be conceited about anything. If you retain the pride of thinking that you are learned, great, or noble, you will not acquire any good qualities. So cast away conceit and train yourself in Dharma practice without wavering for even a single moment.”

Without selfishness or pride, I’m confident and secure in Patrul Rinpoche words:  “
For the sake of promoting his followers through skillful means, such a Guru may, at present, be behaving like a common man. But in the real sense, his mind equals that of a Buddha, and therefore he is altogether different from an ordinary person. All of his actions are done solely in order to adjust to the nature of his followers, and you should definitely regard them as thoughtful conduct which is superior to that of others.”

I bow my head to your lotus feet.  Guru’s merit is immeasurable.  May Guru and consort live long for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May the pandemic caused by the coronavirus come swiftly to an end also ceasing the suffering it causes.

  14. TantraMikaya says:
Dear holy Guru with many thanks for your article The Story about the Horse Garriage Rider of a General. First of all, thank you for this article. I take from this article.
How do we define devotion to the teacher, our guru? And how should our behavior be?
Healthy devotion arises automatically when you encounter a trusting connection from a previous life or find something that matches your deepest inclinations. If these are clearly and sensibly reflected, it is as if you were looking at the best possible face in the mirror.
We are thrilled by the dedication and actions of our holy guru that make us happy in the long term and that make ourselves more convincing and useful for others. To see and experience our holy guru as a teacher and his wise knowledge and strive to develop similar qualities. This is how a transference arises that we began 2450 years ago, according to Buddha’s full experience of the nature of the mind.
The quickest access to enlightenment is therefore a close connection to our holy guru and teacher. Here many qualities of the spirit mature and “enthusiastic empathy” arises. Enthusiasm and the deep trust in our holy guru as an expression of the inherent possibilities are very effective means of breaking down your own limits and habits. Only we can learn independently and trust our knowledge.
However, the devotion that arises must be connected with human maturity, because that way we can learn and acquire knowledge, each according to his abilities. Trust in our holy guru must not lead to independence, lack of humor or compulsive imitation. Instead, with devotion, respect, and trust, we may follow the holy guru and dharma on the path to enlightenment. Our holy guru shows us the way and our behavior and behavior should be characterized by humility and gratitude. “If you study the Dharma only for the purpose of studying, and if you only study the Dharma for your own good to prove how intelligent you are, you don’t need a guru-student relationship. Then it’s like going to university. You study there with different teachers and professors, and you make good progress. But if you really want to bind yourself to the path, it is necessary to build such a relationship. ”
May our holy Guru life long for the sake of all sentient beings. May all beings achieve the Happiness of Buddhas nature. May all creatures be free from Suffering and stay strong and healthy. Om Mani Padme Hum
