Letter to disciples and learners : HOW AND WHEN DO YOU SLEEP?

This morning the weather was getting worse. My cats was sleeping, wasn’t know anything. Did they have a nightmare during sleeping? I didn’t know but it made me to remember about conversation yesterday…My old friend asked me:

Những con mèo của Thầy đang ngủ, không biết gì cả

– Did you sleep well yesterday?
– Not bad. And you?
– Oh, that’s too bad!
– I’ m unhappy to hear that for but in my opinion, it depends on each person with his condition

I said “good by” and pray that “when seeing suffering, may the suffering of all beings pacified”.

I think, the sleeping is important for everyone. In fact, all we need to sleep for feeling better, for looking better, for behaveing better, for, thinking better. But, I don’t want to tell you (my disciples) must know how and when do you sleep.

Some people say that practitioner Dharma of Budhism have to sleep less than others, ..No, it’s not true! I don’t advice you to stay up later or to oversleep, to sleep on your side, wich side do you prefer; to sleep you sleep on your stomach or your back; to sleep only on your own bed, how many hours do you sleep every night; sleep with light on, sleep without light ..No, never way! I only encourage you to sleep when do you need, for example, you are tired so you want to sleep and to sleep for recovering. It’s good for you to fall asleep even was meditating.

It’s good for you to fall asleep even was meditating.

However, when you sleep, may you have a nice dream, but maybe you often have a nightmare. This is Mat Tu’s talking: “Recently Mat Tu wrote an article telling a story in her nightmare in which she encountered extremely frightening scenes. In that situation, Mat Tu remembered to remind her companion to perform taking refuge in the Three Jewels, then reciting the Mani mantra as quickly as possible, as if “extinguishing the fire that burns on one’s head”. Afterwards, Mat Tu saw Guru standing in a high tower waving at her. Getting the right direction, Mat Tu ran towards Guru and eventually escaped the danger.

Tantra books confirmed that perception during a dream after sleep is 9 times more blurred (bad) than when awake. It should be noticed that not all Buddhist practitioners could summon the savior in the form of vital spirit while dreaming. Because in the state of dreaming, one exists in another indefinite substance which is frequently wavered from one scene to another without any logic. The eyesight and hearing ability will be neutralized with uncertain experiences, all the perceptions are totally controlled by the instinct sentiment. In this situation, the Buddhist practitioner’s body, mind and speech often react in a way they usually did in their previous lives, or they solved the problem due to the instinct that they tried to hold back in reality.

I want to teach you 2 spiritual practicing for overcome frightening scenes.
1/ It’s not bad for your declaring Yoga (Dharma)’ name when having nightmare. (for exemple : I’m Mark Clayton, my Dharma’s name Tantra Mahacitta!)

2/ It’s best for you to pray to all beings be pacified when having nightmare

3/ When falling asleep we should think, “May all beings achieve the absolute state”

I want to finish my writing by holy teachings: “Life-long friends and relatives must eventually bid farewell. Wealth accumulated with sweat and tears must eventually abandon. Consciousness, a guest who lodges in this body, must eventually depart. Not attach to this life. That is the practice of all Bodhisattvas..”.. (from the thirty –seven practices of all the bodhisattvas by Gyalse Tokme Zangpo)

Thinley- Nguyen Thanh

    Dear Guru,

I am so delighted to read this article from you. Thank you, Guru, for giving us another meaningful dharma gift in English with an interesting concept, bringing us the joyfulness to learn, practice and apply Pure Mind dharma in our daily lives.

After the previous lesson about “eating”, now we receive from Guru the beneficial lesson about “sleeping”, another important action for everyone. Through your teaching, I understand that there is no rule in the time or in the way we sleep, we should sleep whenever we need, for get back energy to live, to work; we can sleep in any posture suitable for us. It depends on the conditions of every single person. The important thing must be noticed is what we do when experiencing nightmares during sleep to overcome the frightened scenes, and more than that, it can be also considered as one of the rehearsals for the bardo state in future. I am grateful to Guru for teaching us the 2 spiritual practicing of (1) declaring Dharma’s name and (2) praying for all beings be pacified when having nightmare. I am impressed and admire the wisdom and compassion at Guru, who always inspires us about the unique way of Dharma pratice _ simple, flexible, stress-free, to-the-point _ aiming for true benefits, for being fully prepared for the most important moment of a practitioner’s life. Following Guru’s guidance, I feel Buddhism is so practical, and I feel so fortunate to learn Pure Mind Dharma discovered by you, such an inconceivable mean to go straight to the city of liberation!

May Guru have a good health and live long for the sakes of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

May the covid 19 pandemic soon be eliminated.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Dear holy Guru,
I am delighted to read this article. I will remember and do three spiritual practices below as your teaching to overcome frightening scenes.
(1)Declaring Dharma name when having a nightmare. (2) Praying to all beings be pacified when having a nightmare. (3) when falling asleep, “may all beings achieve the absolute state”. Thank Guru for your teaching.
May Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May the Covid-19 pandemic be over soon.

  5. Cao Diệu Mật Thủy says:

    Dear Guru,
I love this article so much. I want to show my gratitude towards Guru for giving us a practical lesson in an essence, understandable and appealing writing. I love all the aspects of life becoming beneficial Dharma lessons to us thanks to your wisdom and bodhicitta.
I can see the cutie cats sleeping peacefully in Song Nguyen Tantra house. Not sure if they have sweet dreams or nightmares, but it’s not important as they’re still accompanying Guru, living within your love and your care. Similarly, we are so lucky to have Guru teaching us even how to eat and sleep so that we can accumulate merits. I learnt that we shouldn’t be concerned about those belonging to habits or personal preferences (stay up late, oversleep, which side to sleep, how the facility is, etc.), but our attitude towards sleeping, taking our sleeping state as a chance to practise Dharma. Thank you Guru for teaching us the 3 spiritual practisings: (1) Declaring Dharma (Yoga) name, (2) Praying for all sentient beings’ sufferings to be pacified when having a nightmare, and (3) Praying for all sentient beings achieve the absolute state before going to sleep.
I believe that when we regularly practise your teachings, we’ll all have a benefit sleep even with good dreams or bad dreams.
Thank you Guru for this inspiring lesson.
May Guru have good health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings.
May the Covid-19 pandemic will come to an end soon.

    Dear holy Guru,
I am grateful to read your meaningful article. I am impressed by the way of your writing. It is so vivid and practical. From a very common story about sleeping, you have taught us a deep lesson on enjoy life with Dharma mind. When the practitioners keep mindfulness and Bodhicitta in their mind, they can enjoy all things coming to them. They should sleep when they feel asleep, they can lie down at any positions they want. It is common for them to face mightmares and the most important thing is the spiritual solutions to this issues.
The most wonderful teaching from you is the practical and effective methods to solve all spiritual problems with Bodhicitta. You give us the solutions to the nightmares as follows:
1/ Declaring Yoga (Dharma)’ name when having nightmare.
2/ It’s best for practitioners to pray to all beings be pacified when having nightmare
3/ When falling asleep we should think, “May all beings achieve the absolute state”
Thank you so much for your valuable teachings. I look forward to reading more of your writing.
May you have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May Pure Mind Dharma spread all over the world to benefit all beings.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.
May Covid 19 pandemic be over soon.

    Dear Guru,

I am delighted to read one more article written by you in both English and Vietnamese. I admire your virtue and wisdom.

I am happy to feel the peacefulness of Song Nguyen Tantra house through the images of the happy cats. Thanks to them, I have chance to receive a Dharma lesson from Guru. I have never felt the reality of Buddhism more clearly than since I studied with you. I understand that Buddhist practitioners do not have to follow any difficult regulations such as: sleeping less than others or having vegetarian diet,… Instead, we can act in a way that suits our biological mechanism as long as we have right view. Because when having right view, we will be able to transform ordinary activities into noble Dharma practice.

I will keep in mind 3 ways to overcome frightening scenes if having a nightmare:
    (1) Declaring Yoga name
    (2) Praying to all beings be pacified
    (3) Praying “May all beings achieve the absolute state” when falling asleep

I am grateful for your teaching.

May you have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

    Dear Guru,
    I have read this article.
I am gladly admired and praise the writing power of Guru who write the bilingual dharma lesson. Through this, it helps us to get the lesson for the Dharma is life, life is Dharma by a daily action is sleeping.
I thank Guru for compassionately explaining to us that sleep is important to humans, helping to restore health after fatigue. Just need sleeping according to the health needs of each person is enough, not based on the duration (long or short) or position as long as it is comfortable. As well as that including Buddhist practitioners, not clinging like prejudice “That practitioner Dharma of Budhism have to sleep less than others” while life is impermanent as teaching by Gyalse Tokme Zangpo that “Life-long friends and relatives must eventually bid farewell. Wealth accumulated with sweat and tears must eventually abandon. Consciousness, a guest who lodges in this body, must eventually depart. Not attach to this life. That is the practice of all Bodhisattvas…” (From the Thirty-seven practices of all the bodhisattvas).
I also thank Guru’s compassionately teaching spiritual practices both to overcome frightening scenes in dreams and to create conditioned reflexes that help us “wake up” in the life, in the dreams, and in the Bardo by connecting with the Guru, connecting with the Three Jewels as ways below:
1/It’s not bad for your declaring Yoga (Dharma)’ name when having nightmare.
2/ It’s best for you to pray to all beings be pacified when having nightmare.
3/ When falling asleep we should think, “May all beings achieve the absolute state”
I am grateful to Guru for all the teaching.
May Guru live long and have good health for the sake of all sentient beings.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.
May the Covid 19 will end soon.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  17. Mật Ánh Dương says:

    Dear Guru,
I would like to express my gratitude to your great effort of granting us a meaningful dharma lesson in 2 languages. In this hard times of life, it is indeed rare for someone to live slowly and take notice of simple things around, let alone think of dharma and the others. The burden of making a living just makes life lose its joy and only exhaustion and fatigue remains. And fortunately, we still are here, rely on your pure energy to balance our life, find happiness in simple things, like looking at those sleeping cats, so innocent and cute.
Through your teaching, I understand that, eating or sleeping is not something important on the liberation path that we need to think of a way making it “special” like trying a vegetarian diet or sleep less. If the destination of enlightenment is easily achieved as that, I think I and even many others will choose doing that way, but actually it is not. That is the reason why Buddha has left us a treasure of wisdom and we all now need to follow the guidance of a holy Guru to live in the right orbit of Dharma.
I would like to thank Guru for reminding us 3 practicing methods to overcome nightmare, I hope I can apply your teaching in my dream and more important, in my bardo. I am indeed grateful for all of your effort, including learning and writing English article.
May Guru have good health and live long for the happiness of all sentient beings.
    May covid pandemic soon end.

It is likely that, some people so focus on eating, sleeping because they belive that it is a Buddhist practice. But Buddha teached “use wisdom as a career”, so I am aware of that attachment to eating, sleeping is not the way to the city of liberation.
I will keep in mind Guru’s teachings to have “hight quality” sleeps that benefit myself and others. I also understand that diligently practcing Dhrama while awake helps me to have conditioned reflexes when facing terible dangers. Thank you Guru for your guiding.
May Guru have good health and live long for the sake of sentient beings.

  18. Cao Diệu Mật Từ says:

    Dear Guru,
I am delighted to read this article. I am so grateful that under your teachings, we are not burdened by any unworthy hinders that many other Buddhist practitioners have to encounter, for example, they care a lot about what to eat, what to drink, when to sleep, etc. Eventually, their only cares are about food, drink, time pressure, which are all related to the body, while the Buddha always emphasized that Buddhism take mind transformation as the core. Instead of following all the rules that bind us to that kind of mind trap, we are taught by our Guru to use all the activities, including sleeping, as a means to practice Dharma. While reading your article, I am happy to imagine the life of a Buddhist practitioner that are open-minded and liberal. I remembered the frightening scenes I had seen in one of the nightmares and Guru saved me after I recited my Dharma name and took refuge in the Three Jewels through this article, we are so lucky to have been instructed by Guru so that we are not protected not only when we are awake but also when we sleep. I happily rejoice in Guru’s virtue, wisdom, and Bodhicitta. May Guru have good health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings.
May all sentient beings achieve the Buddha’s nature happiness.

  19. Tantra Dharma Sunyata says:

    Dear Holy Guru,
I have digested the short letter titled: How and When do you Sleep.
    The divine content includes that:
1.We should sleep to feel better, look better, think better, and behave better.
2.We should sleep when we are tired even while meditating.
3.There are no strict rules about how to lie when sleeping: whether to lie on our back,on our side , facing downwards or whatever.
4.From May Tu’s experience,it is recommended that when nightmares congest us,we should take Refuge in the Three Jewels, chant the Mani Mantra, declare our Dharma name and present ourselves to our Guru.
5.We should also pray that all beings be peaceful during nightmares.
6.We should also pray that when falling asleep, may all beings achieve the absolute state.
Great indeed is this teaching, though brief and rendered in Guru’s own English.
May the Guru ever continue to enjoy good health coupled with Long Life for service to all sentient beings.

However, many mistakes this teaching as some forms of physical requirements such as when to sleep, where to sleep, what posture, which direction, etc. Thanks to your teaching, I have come to know that they don’t matter, as Guru has always taught us that Dharma practicing is nonstop and doesn’t depend on physical barriers. What matter is our mind when we sleep, how do we encounter nightmare and other unwanted ambiguity that could lead us to the state of impurity. Again, you show us how. By following your guidance, I can train myself to keep mindfulness in my sleep, when my mind is 9 times more blurry than usual, thus preparing me for the final trip into limbo, which is crucial for our journey to spiritual liberation.
Ultimately, this teaching frees me from my fear of not staying mindful in my sleep, thus I can sleep when, where and however I want, without losing my pure mind.
Thank you, I pray for the longevity and health of Guru for the sake of all sentient beings,
May all sentient beings be awaken in the state of awakening,
    Om Mani Padme Hum

    Dear Holy Guru,

Thank-you for this article on the importance of sleep and that how, when, and where we sleep should be of little concern to us.
We also may use Dharma name when dreaming or having nightmares. It is very relaxing to watch cat sleep.

May Guru have long happy healthy life for the benefit of all sentient beings.

    May Covid 19 end soon

    Dear Guru,

Thank You for this wonderful teaching. While I do not suffer from nightmares, I do find performing a short meditation session followed by prayers for all sentient beings to achieve the Dharmakaya (which I learned from class) before laying down allows me to sleep much more peacefully and restfully.

I look forward to adding these practices to my evening routine and to store this knowledge to help others I may encounter who suffer from nightmares. May the suffering of all sentient beings be pacified.

Thanks and praise to you Guru for sharing this article and for writing it in English for your Western students to understand.

Praise and glory to the three jewels of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha!
Praise and glory to our Guru and his enlightened teachings!
Prayers for an end to the Covid crisis!
    Om Mani Padme Om!

  30. Tantra Sutradaka says:

    Reverend Gurujee,
    Om Mani Padme Hum
I bow before your lotus feet
Man is grappled with problems, minor or measure. Because no problem no life. As after tasting the bitter foodstuff, the taste of sweet and sour becomes enjoyable. In making the food tasty for generating a pleasant sensation to the tongue and mind even bitter spice is also poured. For making a beautiful painting we choose different colors including the black one which is considered to be evil and ominous and inauspicious, and so with life.
In the same way, we do sleep every day and must sleep to give composer to the mind. The reason is simply happy and pleasant mind keeps us healthy and happy, as the mind is the fountainhead of all the good and state of life as well as it is the cause of human bondage and liberation too. But a perplexed mind can neither attain Nibbana nor can get prosperity in the Sansara i.e. in mundane life. Hence sleep is essential in everyone’s life.
Now, sleep is of two types. Sound sleep or dreamless sleep and sleep with the dream. Dreamless sound sleep is healthy for everyone as in this stage mind gets full rest as it does not wander anywhere, it is as good as meditation. The second is sleep with dreams. It is of three types. One is Sleeping with good dreams. The second is sleeping with normal dreams. It is a mixed experience of good and bad. Up to some extent, it is good. In this stage, the mind is partially at work. But to sleep with Nightmares is not at all good for anyone. In this stage, mind is highly perturbed during the sleeping time also. It is not only harmful to health but also an obstacle in the way to the spiritual path. It should be our duty to be careful against it and try to be away from it. But if at all it becomes a regular feature a proper treatment is needed. Normally people go to a psychiatrist for its cure as it is related to the mind and peace of mind is its path to its elimination. But our holy Guru has provided a few simple tips that curtail the illegitimate movement of mind and clams it. According to the Buddhist way of life, meditation is the proper medicine. Because it curtails mental activities slowly and gradually and makes it calm and composed in a positive way. Meditation is defined as the concentration of the pious streams of thought process (Kusal Chittass Ekaggata Samadhi.) If we can’t curtail our discursive thoughts we cannot be free of nightmares. Meditation is a very long and tedious process and takes much time including several physical preparedness. Modern man is not used to these as well as he cannot sustain the tiresome mental and physical exercise for a longer period in one stretch as well as for a longer period in terms of months and years as he has paucity time and lack of energy as well.
Now a million-dollar question is how one can surmount the time taking tedious problems of the yoga and yogic exercise? Our holy Guru has come with a novel solution wherein the thought process of the mind is curbed and the cursive pondering and brooding state of mind is diverted and replaced by positive thinking. It neutralizes the negativity of the mind resulting in the evaporation of nightmares and the emergence of sweet dreams or dreamless sleep. For that, he has advised us of three spiritual practices. The enumeration of those is mentioned and enumerated below.
    1. One should recite one’s Dhamma or Yogic name that diverts the fearful thoughts resulting in the nightmare and takes in another direction. This diversion of mind results in temporarily forgetting the ills and evils of the nightmare. And the panic of the fearful events in the dreams lessens and if we continue it regularly and repeatedly one may get rid of nightmares. This is a very psychological process helping in curbing the problem at hand.
    2. When a nightmare starts it is better to think repeatedly about the well-being of all the sentient beings. This is, is expansion of one’s self into the whole of the universe. This is the sublime state of personal compassion extended to all. In this sublime state, nightmare does not dare to stay inside the mind or the mental states.
    3. Last but not least, while going to bed, if one prays for attaining the perfect state for all the sentient beings the nightmare will not come.
It is a fact proved by several psychologists including our Guru through time tasted experiments is, what we think a whole day or before sleep often reappears as dreams. Hence if our mind is full of sublime, positive, spiritual, and compassionate thoughts of well beings of all it may reappear in our dreams.
Thus the triplicate spiritual formula, invented by our holy Guru, will prove to be a milestone in the way of surmounting the problem of nightmare in mundane life without taxing mind, body, and time.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.
May all the sentient beings attain the Buddha Nature and perfection in one’s life
May whole world may get relieved of COVID 19
    Long live our holy Guru
    Om Mani Padme Hum
I again bow my head before the lotus feet of our Guru

      Dear Tantra Sutradaka,
Thank you for your comment! You have shown a complete understanding on this topic, both in ordinary people and Pure Mind Dharma practitioners’ perspectives. I am glad to read your clear and logic reflection that mentioned the pressure of time and constraints hinder modern human beings from tiresome mental and physical exercise through a long period, especially under a tight schedule of daily life. Based on that, you specified the strengths of Pure Mind Yoga which solves all these problems: easy and natural to practice in daily life, maintain positive thinking consistently, and deliver long-term outcomes. It is exact what you have addressed: It neutralizes the negativity of the mind resulting in the evaporation of nightmares and the emergence of sweet dreams or dreamless sleep. Your comment will provide an insightful understanding for others.
May your legitimate wishes come true by the blessings of Avalokiteshvara through Guru’s channel.
      Om mani padme hum.
