Letter from India : WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF GURU

I bow down my head at the lotus feet of Guruji.

First of all, I would like to say that the function of Guru is that of a Lamp , which burning itself, like candle, gives light to others thus extinguishing  their darkness or ignorance.! A great job !

Like candle, gives light to others thus extinguishing  their darkness or ignorance.

There is a Sanskrit quote which says like this :

”  ‘Gu ‘  karo andhakarasya ‘Ru ‘ karo thannivarakaha ”

Thus the word GURU is derived meaning one who throws away the darkness or ignorance of others. Thus Guru is placed in supreme position in all dharma scripts.!

Guru is placed in supreme position in all dharma scripts.!

Though there is little difference in  normal lamp and dharma lamp except for individual capacity, light is a light whose function is same and no other things can challenge it’s noble function.!

Dharma lamp

I recall one story from  Hindu dharma script. Once, the Sun thrown a challenge to the whole world ” who will do such a great work of mine of enlightening and  kick away the darkness ?” !. The Earth,  and all other things were dumb and mute ! .Then  a small mud made from a corner told, “. 0 ! Sun god ! I will do  your work as much as I can to my little capacity and light the small hut or house !.It is said the Sun  bow down its head !.

Sun god ! I will do  your work as much as I can to my little capacity and light the small hut or house !

Guruji has the intelligence and the art of narrating a dharma lesson to his disciples  from whatever he sees naturally, however trivial it may be. For example Guruji sees a dazzling electric light on the roof and writes this letter dealing with  lamp light and right dharma practice.!

Dazzling electric light on the roof

Guru

Incidentally, please remember  Buddha’s last words and message not only to his disciple Amanda, but to the whole world , when he said after after his prinibbana, who will guide and show the path, Buddha said ” Apps deepo bhava”( you yourself become light) in pali language. That is the significance of  lamp’s light for Guruji’s selection in this article.!

Though one should be very careful while throwing a stone at Sun or moon as it may Fallon our head only, Guruji tries to unmask the hypocrytic bad qualities of some dharma practitioners or lamas who  put on saffron garbs and insists that his disciples  should do dharma practice in right view, irrespective of one is a vegetarian or non vegetarian which is of big ambiguity in  Buddhist spiritualism.!

Guruji ending this article by commending Tantra Upasita,  depicts the true genuine Guru- disciple relationship  and show s that Tantra Upasita is really a ‘ Kalyanmitra’ and not a ‘ Papamitra’ which every disciple should aspire for.!

Guru and Tantra Upasita

Sarve janaha Sukhino Bhavantu.

Om Mani padme Hum.

Tantra Nirvadeva.

  3. Mật Thủy says:
    Dear Tantra Nirvadeva,

Your sharing about “What is the function of Guru” gives me the answer that Guru is a Dharma light that “throws away the darkness or ignorance of others” and “is placed in supreme position in all dharma scripts”. As a Dharma light, Guru unmasks the hypocrytic bad qualities of other monks who disguises themselves and taking advantages the followers. So it is our blessings to be near Guru, to be taken out the darkness in and around us and be brighter, following Him on the path to enlightenment. Thank you Guru for guiding us.

    Thank you for your sharing.

May Guru and your consort, Ms Mat Dieu good health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May the Covid-19 epidemic will soon come to an end and may all sentient beings be free from suffering.

    Om mani padme hum!

  4. Mật Hải says:
    Dear Tantra Nirvadeva,

Thank you for sharing your thought with us after reading Guru’s teaching.

Your article remind me about Guru’s picture. Guruji is a Lamp of liberation for me, for all the disciples who always keep in mind, in the bottom of heart his teachings.

Especially in Tantra Yana, Pure mind Yoga (Thanh Tri) lineage, Guruji is the center, the root of all dharma practicing.

I bow my head under lotus foot of holy Guru.

May Guru and his consort live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Tantra Nirvadeva have a good health and get more successfull, happiness in dharma life from Guru’s transmittion.

May COVID-19 pandemic will come to an end soon.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  5. Mật Từ says:
    Dear Tantra Nirvadeva,

Thank you for your sharing. I was impressed by the meaningful visualization of a lamp to the function of Guru, which means “..who throws away the darkness or ignorance of others. Thus Guru is placed in supreme position in all dharma scripts”. Even the sun and all the physical lamps are being lightened, without the lamp which was shined by Guru, we will always be stuck in the darkness of ignorance. I also shared the appreciation of your thought that “Guru has the intelligence and the art of narrating a dharma lesson to his disciples from whatever he sees naturally”, so that it is easier for us to understand deeply and apply into our daily lives by inferring Dharma to life lessons and vice versa through his teachings.

May Guru good health and longevity for the sake of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings attain the Buddha’s nature happiness.

May Covid19 pandemic will end soon.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  6. Mật Giác Đăng says:
    Dear Tantra Nirvadeva,

I am elated to read your sharing after reading Guru’s article.

I very much rejoice your words which cite that Guru means one throws away the darkness or ignorance of others, Guru is placed in supreme position in all dharma scripts. I also agree with you that He has an amazing art of narrating the benefical dharma lessons in practical, meaningful and vivid ways, which illustrate the principle “Dharma is life and life is Dharma”. May us, disciples and learners at ITA institute, will nurture the devotion towards holy Guru as well as keep in mind to act in accordance with Guru’s teachings, to always be covered by His light, to always follow Him on the path to the city of liberation.

May Guru and His consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Tantra Nirvadeva achieves your legitimate wishes.

May the covid-19 pandemic will be soon eliminated.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  7. Mật Chánh Tấn says:
    Dear Tantra Nirvadeva,

It is really nice to read what you have shared in this article. I truly like your sharing: “The function of Guru is that of a lamp, which gives light to others thus extinguishing their darkness or ignorance!”. That is so true from what I have experienced and from the real stories or discipline’s successes that thanks to the Guru’s instruction. Thanks to the Guru’s teaching and instruction, we could identify the fake ‘spiritual mask” or not to fall into the trap of “papamitra”. Under the effect of refraction, we might see reflecting images of the lamp in other positions. However, thanks to the right thought, right understanding that we accumulate or nurture through Pure Mind Yoga, we know these images are not true. The true Dharma lamp not only light us up, but it also warms us by its heat. It is the heat that comes from the Buddha’s teaching, the Guru’s wisdom and compassion via Pure Mind Yoga. Although we could not see the heat but we actually can feel it and know it is true. And like you have said in the article, the light from Guru’s wisdom and compassion, which we can get transmitted from practicing Pure Mind Yoga (with the acceptance of the Guru), helps us to throw away our darkness or ignorance, which is the cause of our sufferings and then leads us to the true happiness of liberation. Thank you Tantra Nirvadeva for sharing such a nice article.

May holy Guru and his consort live long for the sake of other sentient beings.

May Tantra Nirvadeva have good health and get more happiness in Dharma life from Guru’s transmission.

May the epidemic of Covid-19 come to end soon.

May all sentient beings be free from suffering and get enlightened.

    Om Mani Padme Hum!

    Dear Tantra Nirvadeva,

I am delighted to read your sharing. I’m so touching with your first sentence “the function of Guru is that of the Lamp which burn itself, like a candle gives light to others thus extinguishing their darkness and ignorance”. Guru really has spent all of his mentality, resources, time, forces and effort to shine away the darkness and ignorance inside beings, inside us. I would like to express my gratitude toward Guru because he brought light into our life so we can have right view, right understanding, so we can see through those hypocritical mask and also we could enjoy the color in our life and appreciate and treasure the current, the opportunity to learn right Dharma and follow his foot step on the path to Enlightenment. With his intelligence, wisdom and Bodhicitta, Guru has applied Dharma lesson through simple life subject so we can understand easily and throughly Dharma lesson, for example his valuable article “Normal lamp, Dharma lamp”. Thank you for your sharing. May you attain all the righteous dream.

May Guru and his consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Covid-19 pandemic will end soon.

May all sentient beings attain the Buddha’s nature happiness.

    Om Mani Padme Hum!

  11. Mật Diệu Hằng says:
    Dear Tantra Nirvadeva,

I am delighted to read your sharing. I agree with you that Guru is the one who throw away the darkness or ignorance of others. It is the light of his wisdom and compassion  that is shining to throw away the darkness of ignorance in the practitioners ‘s mind. If no such light, all beings keep getting stuck into the darkness of suffering in samsara. It is Guru who helps them out of suffering with his guidance.  It is too foolish for anyone not to follow his guidance. Many people always claim that why they always get suffering or unhappy but they do not want to do action even though they access to Guru guidance or methods.  When they do some small things,  they expect something big in return. They practice dharma with their attachments on ego,  8 worldy winds. How can they get free from suffering?

The light from Guru’s wisdom and bodhichitta will be lit in the practitioners’ mind when their foundation of devotion is deep enough. No devotion to Guru, the practitioners can not get the light to shine their Dharma life for the benefit of self and others.

Thank you so much for your sharing. I look forward to reading more of your writing.

May Guru and his consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May all beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

May the covid 19 pandemic be soon over.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Dear Holy Guru!
I am delight to read this Tantra Nivadeva ‘s writing. I rejoice with his devotion to Guru for understanding “What is function of Guru”.
The light as function of Guru, despite the violent waves of the Samsara ocean, still illuminated. I understand that, because the feet of that lamp is composed of materials wisdom and bodhicitta, so it is as solid as a mountain range. Hypocrites are like lamps with rotten legs, it collapses at any time although those lights were painted with a flashy appearance. I feel what a pity for sentient beings dazzled by the false light. Thank you Tantra Nivadeva for your share. Praying for myself always cherishes that precious lamp.
May Guru and his consort have good health and live long for the sake of sentient beings.
May sentient beings attain the Buddha’ nature happyness.
May Covid -19 pademic will be soon over.

    Dear Holy Guru,

I rejoice in reading Letter from India: What is the function of Guru?

Through this sharing, I understood that being disciple of Guru is a good fortune in our life since the light from your wisdom and compassion will save us from the brink of rebirth in samsara,  and help us move a step closer to enlightenment and nirvana. But I also know that, no matter how much we struggle, even if follow Guru’s teachings, everything becomes in vain if we don’t have enough deep and sincere devotion to you.

I literally have the same thought with Tantra Nirvadeva that “Guru has the intelligence and the art of narrating a dharma lesson to his disciples from whatever he sees naturally”. The material of real life just makes your article much more splendid and due to this, it is easier for us to approach and have good grasp of Dharma lesson.

Thank you, Tantra Nirvadeva for your meaningful sharing. May you have good health and be diligent in practicing dharma.

    Dear respected Guru,

I have read this letter  “What is the function of Guru?” from Tantra Nirvadeva from India. I am delighted to read his sharing and agree with him that Guru is “the one who throws away the darkness or ignorance of others” and “the function of Guru is that of the lamp which burns itself, like a candle gives lights to others thus extinguishing their darkness and ignorance”. Thanks to the light of Guru’s wisdom, bodhichitta and compassion, I could identify the fake “spiritual masks”  and couldn’t fall into the traps of “papamitra”, ego attachment and eight worldly winds. Without Guru, I can’t achieve anything. Any teaching from Guru is a precious chance for me to see the light of liberation, if I have deep and sincere Guru devotion. I really like the thought of Tantra Nirvadeva that ” Guru has the intelligence and the art of narrating a Dharma lesson to his disciples from whatever he sees naturally”. With materials from real life and the perfect method of pedagogy, Guru as a great master, inspires us strong determination of liberation while practicing and applying Dharma in daily life for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Guru and you consort live long for the sake of all sentient.

Thanks Tantra Nirvadeva for meaningful sharing. May you have  a good health and be diligent in practicing Dhamar with nurturing Guru devotion.
