Letter to disiples no.217: PHAN THIET

Dear disciples,

People think of Phan Thiet as a place for sea -tourism. Anyone who loves the salty also know that Phan Thiet has fish sauce, a famous specialty of a golden age. Poem lovers remember Phan Thiet thanks to the poem of Han Mac Tu, which is deeply attached to human sufferings:

“Oh gosh Phan Thiet, dear Phan Thiet

That mourning left a piece of falling moon

She had disappeared for a long time when I arrived

It means dying from centuries of moon

Golden moon, affectionate moon are not satisfied

I look at the moon with full of grief for moon ..”.

The moonlight from that year was still there when we arrived Phan Thiet, but its reflection was the new urban on Vo Van Kiet, Hung Vuong and Ton Duc Thang street. Who was the lady that Han Mac Tu plaintively moaning? I’ll be never like that because I have the co-practitioner, the companion, the schoolfellow , the same lineage fellow. There are so many perfect couples in Song Nguyen Tantra House (read the article “From happiness of a couple to the happiness of the Buddha Nature”).

The living room of Minh Hien hotel

This time I came Phan Thiet was different from many times before because of departing from a new route. Initially, I had planned to go to Ba Ria and then to Xuyen Moc via Phuoc Hai, Dat Do; But in the middle of the road to Hoi Bai junction it was stuck by … the funeral of a certain monk or nun! I turned the steering wheel on the opposite direction to Toc Tien; And on this route, I felt the joy in my mind that I hadn’t realized for a long time.

Dear disciples,

The route still smells of asphalt, shining like clouds after clouds

Imagine a 60 km long route still smells of asphalt, shining like clouds after clouds that made my car rolling smoothly. The two sides are mostly mountainous hills, rubber trees or fields of rice-green that stretched my eyesight to the end of the horizon. Just two years ago, I shrunk my driver’s hand on this car because of the dusty roads and grit and sand of constructions scattering. I unexpectedly realize that the country is emerging after more than 40 years of heavy war-wounds. I suddenly exclaim the word “peacefully” which many anti-war songs have been sung highly by Duy Khanh, Pham The My, Khanh Ly to the hoarse throat, sore throat, but in vain.

the wasteland with singed grass in the past is now a 2 star Minh Hien hotel

Here, the wasteland with singed grass in the past is now a 2 star Minh Hien hotel that we have spent the night. This place offers good service, affordable prices and enthusiastic staff, dedicated to guests, including the old guardian. Here, the Linda coffee in Bong Trang commune, Xuyen Moc district is owned by an overseas Vietnamese, who cameback to live here and built a few hectares of hills into a famous local culinary spot. The home of the owner is like “Tuyet Tinh Palace” (Passionless Valley) looking down the romantic green hillside. The staff here said that the owner preferred to stay in Vietnam than the US for many reasons. I know that many American singers, actors, actresses have no longer wanted to come back the US when they’ve found a bright path for their fame in Vietnam. Hoai Linh, Giao Linh, Evis Phuong, Nhat Cuong, Chi Tai, Quang Le… are this case. I am glad to hear that then I wonder why there are people who want to cheat the US government to settle down by the way of false marriage or other political reasons; while the foreigners want to live in our S shaped country?

Dear disciples,

This Dharma trip evokes in me a wonder why there are less traffic than usual on the roads I passing, so different from my imagination! A local resident also said that the traffic is often so busy that they follow into an endless long tail on the high way, he has no idea about such difference on these days! Then I dimly understand by myself that it turns out no one wanting to go out due to the no.4 typhoon. Thanks to that, I drive my car faster and less dangerously. This is the second time I and my consort have had a Dharma trip to the Central through the big storm time (this time and in 2014).

At Linda Café

…looking down the romantic green hillside

Maria Thuy Tien (in blue) and Mat Kha Tue

It is now the third day of the Dharma trip, the warm sunshine promise the generous smile of the God Weather! We don’t forget to visit Maria Thuy Tien and Mat Kha Tue in Ninh Thuan province on our way. Maria Thuy Tien bares: “I’m so suprised to see Guru and your consort here!”. That’s right, It’s not sure that a priest visit a faithful, much less a Guru who has domestic and international disciples, being busy to deal with the writting, guiding spiritual activities and other Dharma works!

To me, there is no discrimination against personal and social conditions of students, but their devotion to the Guru. I’ve visited the house of Mat Tich, Mat Khai which is deep located in the village, haven’t I? So don’t suffer from a complex! However, I also hope that won’t make your negative emotions accumulated for not appreciate such value of attention, then waste your time of cultivating. I end this article by the teaching of Guru Rinpoche, a patriarch of Tibetan Buddhism: “Although your Guru ‘s merit is as much as layers of cloud, the blessing rain will never fall down unless you have a field of devotion”.

  2. Dear Holy Guru,

I am deeply touched by your noble work of making the preaching journey for the sake of all sentient beings. On your preaching journey, you came to visit your disciples in a far distant provinces to uphold the Dharma. Your compassion always is equal towards all sentient beings, regardless of their jobs, social-class and education. Only the true devotion to Guru brings them close to enlightenment and get the blessing from the Guru.

In addition, even if we start practising the Dharma, unless we have been accepted by the Guru it will be of no use. The Condensed Transcendent Wisdom says: “The Buddha and the teachings depend upon the spiritual friend. Thus said the Conqueror, supreme embodiment of all good qualities.”

The Buddha’s teaching is immense, its transmissions are numerous, and it covers an inexhaustible range of topics. Without relying on the pith instructions of the Guru we would never know how to condense the essential points of all those teachings and put them into practice.

Atisa affirmed that a practitioner needs to rely on the Guru or the spiritual friend on the path to enlightenment, Atisa taught: “when it comes to doing the practice-even if you can explain the whole Tripitaha from memory and are very skilled in metaphysics without the teacher’s practical guidance you and the Dharma will part company.”, and he explained: “You may be able to keep the three vows perfectly, but unless you are determined to free yourself from the three worlds of samsara it just creates further causes of sarnsara, You may be able to strive day and night to do good with body, speech, and mind, but unless you know how to dedicate the merit to perfect enlightenment, two or three wrong thoughts are enough to destroy it entirely. You may be teachers and meditators, full of piety and learning, but unless your minds are turned away from the eight ordinary concerns, whatever you do will only be for this present life, and you will not encounter the path that helps for future lives.” This illustrates how important it is to be taken under the care of a teacher, a spiritual friend. (quoting from the words of my perfect teacher).

    Dear Holy Guru,

Thanks to your care and compassion, we can connect with you at any time, in anywhere by reading and commenting on chanhtuduy.com. You help us connect with the pure energy of sublime realms of Buddhas and Yidam. Besides, you protect us from losing merit and far from wrong thoughts so that we can enjoy the life with balanced mind and step firmly on the path to enlightenment.

I am so blessed and lucky to be your disciple. And I am proud of being a member of Song Nguyen Tantra House. I remember the Guru Rinpoche’s teaching: “Although your Guru‘s merit is as much as layers of cloud, the blessing rain will never fall down unless you have a field of devotion”.

May you and your consort have a good health and live long for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May all your preaching journeys be successful to uphold the Dharma.

I am delighted in reading the English version translated by Mat Thuy. Her translation supports to flourish your teaching all over the world for the happiness of all sentient beings.

May Mat Thuy get the legitimate wishes and be joyful on the path to enlightenment.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  3. Dear Holy Guru,

I am delighted to read your article. I’m elated by your Bodhicitta, which spread the “clear light” of the Buddha for the sake of all sentient beings. I would like to express my gratitude to you for your teaching. I rejoice in Mat Thuy’s good deed of translation. Her translation supports to flourish your discourse all over the world for the sake of all sentient beings.

May you and your consort live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Mat Thuy have a good health and make progress on the path to enlightenment.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of the Buddha’s nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum!

  6. Tantra Mikaya (jane) says:
Dear holy guru. Thank you very much for your article of your trip and the beautiful photos. Your article is very poetic and full of devotion. I could read from it. I am very happy to read this article and would like to share my understanding of this article. I learned that the quickest access to enlightenment in the connection to your own teacher, Holy Guru can arise. Here, many of the qualities of the mind mature, and there is an enthusiastic empathy. Enthusiasm and deep trust in our Guru as an expression of the inherent possibilities are very effective means of resolving your own limitations and habits. This dedication, however, must necessarily be connected with human maturity. Devotion, therefore, should arise out of the desire to take over certain qualities considered as meaningful and convincing by our Guru for the sake of all. The photo of your disciple expresses the joy of being together in harmony. May our Guru be in good health to teach us the Dharma successfully and may our Guru feel joy in his travels. May all beings be happy.

Cầu nguyện tất cả chúng sanh an vui, hạnh phúc.

      Om Mani Padme Hum.”

    Dear Holy Guru

    I am Tantra Haramitra

    I thank you for this insight into your trip, two things came shinning through your teaching;

firstly your delight and love of Vietnam. You paint such a beautiful picture.

secondly, your love for the people you meet and their devotion to you.

It brings me great joy to read these words and the picture you describe. I give you my devotion and respect, Holy Guru, and asked that you pay me attention as I grow and learn from you.

May the holy Guru have good health and live long for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha ‘s nature.

  11. Tantra Citta (Jeffrey Bernard Forest) says:
    Dear Holy Guru,

Thank you for the inspired and enlightened article. The importance of Guru devotion is something all sentient beings should hold in their heart, their speech and their mind. You should regard the guru as more exalted than the Buddha. If you do that, realization will come in this life. Because a buddha cannot happen without a guru, we must hold the guru as more precious than the buddhas. Our mind is not oneness with ignorance, with obscurations. It is only temporarily obscured and by serving our guru we can purify many eons of negative karma and develop higher realizations such as a direct perception of emptiness. Correctly devoting to the virtuous friend is the root of the path to Enlightenment. If we correctly follow the virtuous friend with thought and action, if the root is there, we can have success up to Enlightenment. But one must also enjoy life and living, while on this spiritual journey. If we don’t know the Dharma, we don’t know how to enjoy life, whereas if we know the Dharma, we can enjoy our life. And especially if we practice bodhicitta ~ that is the real enjoyment in life, that is how to enjoy our life the most, to make it most beneficial for sentient beings and for ourselves. As we improve in following our esteemed Master and consort correctly, we come closer to becoming a Bodhisattva and then a buddha. And that is a beautiful thing, my dear students and disciples at Song Nguyen Tantra House. All happiness comes from Dharma and may all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha Nature. Special blessings as well for our Holy Guru and consort. Om Mani Padme Hum 🙂 Tantra Citta (Jeffrey Bernard Forest).
